As previous questions about books on representation theory and Lie theory indicate, there are a lot of them out there aimed at different parts of the subject. (So maybe community-wiki is indicated?) It's good to be clear at the outset that the problem of finite dimensional tensor product decomposition over $\mathbb{C}$ is essentially the same Character Theory of Finite Groups (Dover Books on Mathematics): I. Martin Isaacs: 9780486680149: Amazon.com: Books. It is a very concise and beautiful book about representation theory of finite groups. All you need to know a priori is the basic theory of groups, and, I guess, linear algebra.

It may differ from other more classical books in some aspects. Probably the termonology is more modern. A separate part of the book is devoted to each of these areas and they are all treated in sufficient depth to enable and hopefully entice the reader to pursue research in representation theory. The book is intended as a textbook for a course on representation theory, which could immediately follow the standard graduate abstract algebra course Introduction to Lie Algebras and Representation Theory (Graduate Texts in Mathematics (9)) by J.E. To find out about the book from the publisher go to This book does finite group representation theory and goes quite in depth with it (including some mention of the case where Maschke's theorem does not hold). I believe it is intended for a graduate course but I personally feel like it is a book an undergraduate can also grow into. The book "Representation Theory of Finite Groups: Algebra and Arithmatic" by S. Weintraub describes the theory with interesting proofs, and also with "necessary hypothesis" (whereas, many books on the subject describe the theory, over algebraically closed field, and we miss here arithmatic of the field). The authors give a self-contained exposition of the theory of Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations and related topics. No previous knowledge of physics is required. The text is suitable for a one-semester graduate course and is intended for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in mathematical physics.
After reading this I also recommend the Sternberg's book for physical applications and the topological point of view of group theory. Share.

Peirce's general theory of representation, and then uses that as a basis of comparison to other views.
